What is a Massage?

Massage therapy is the scientific manipulation of soft tissues of the body. The purpose of this is to normalise those tissues using manual techniques that include applying fixed or movable pressure, holding, and/or causing movement of or to the body.

What is Sports Massage?

It is a form of massage which utilises specific techniques and stretches to help obtain maximum performance and physical conditioning with less chance of injury or pain. It increases power, endurance, and flexibility both before and after an event or workout.

Sports Massage Techniques

Effleurage

Effleurage is a massage technique that encourages relaxation, blood circulation and lymph flow. As effleurage increases muscle temperature, the blood flow is directly impacted and therefore preparing the muscle for more vigorous massage techniques.

Petrissage

Petrissage is an effective massage technique in which deep pressure is applied to tissue and underlying muscle. Petrissage is used to free up movement of tissues and muscle by treating concealed knots or spasms.

Neuro Muscular Techniques (NMT)

NMTs are a specialised form of massage that involves application of firm, sustained, and controlled pressure over painful, taut bands of muscle, called myofascial trigger points. The aim of this technique is to release underlying tension and facilitate blood circulation.

Soft Tissue Release

Soft tissue release is an advanced sports massage technique that is used to assess, stretch, and manage the soft tissues in the body, such as the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia.

Muscle Energy Techniques

MET involves instructing the individual to voluntarily contract the specific muscle in a precise and controlled direction, against the therapist's counter force. Therapeutic effects include a reduction in pain and muscle tone, tightened muscles are stretched, weaker muscles are strengthened, local circulation is improved and an increase in mobilisation around joint restrictions.
